CV019: Gilkey Covered Bridge near Jefferson, OR – 1977

This is the Gilkey Covered Bridge spanning Thomas Creek near Jefferson, Linn County, Oregon in September 1977.

The 120-foot bridge is a Howe truss design and was built in 1936 or 1939. The bridge was closed in 1997 after an overweight vehicle cracked timbers but was repaired in 1998 and again opened to motorists. Ten years later, the bridge was again damaged by a truck accident and repaired.

Over the summer of 2017, the bridge underwent a near total renovation with new approach spans and replacement of all timber and concrete substructure, with steel and concrete abutments and piers among some of the improvements. Once completed, the structural weight limit of the bridge will increase from 6 tons to forty tons. The bridge is still in use.
